Description And Operation: Description
Each Passive Entry (PE) outside handle is equipped with:
- Hall-effect outer handle switch
- An inner handle capacitor switch
- Lock (tactile) switch
- An integrated circuit
The capacitive switch membrane is:
- Located on the inner surface of the handle grip
- Used to "wake up" the Radio Frequency Hub Module (RFHM) and start the Passive entry (PE) process
The Hall-effect switch on the handle mechanism is used to:
- Wake up the handle after three weeks of vehicle inactivity
- Movement detection for redundant unlock
- Lock (tactile) switch is used to actively lock the doors
- Contains a magnet in the outer door handle cover to monitor switch/handle movement
Vehicles equipped with the optional PE system have unique outside front door smart handles that incorporate three switches and a logic circuit. These unique PE door smart handles are referred to as smart handles. The smart handle itself is very similar in appearance to those used in conventional non-PE applications, consisting primarily of a grip (4) and a base (1).
The smart handles can be readily identified by a tactile, resistive membrane lock switch (5) located on the outward facing vertical surface at the rearward end of the handle grip, and by a capacitive sensor or switch membrane patch on the inside surface (2) of the grip. A third, Hall-effect type switch as well as an integrated circuit chip are concealed within the grip near the handle base.
The mechanical functions and mounting provisions of the smart handle are identical to those of a conventional outside door handle. However, an integral connector receptacle (3) is located at the forward end of the handle grip where it is concealed within the door interior. The smart handle is connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector of the PE door jumper wire harness.
The individual switches of the PE outside front door handles cannot be adjusted or repaired. If any one of the switches, the integrated circuit or any of the mechanical handle components is damaged or ineffective, the entire handle unit must be replaced.
