Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- With the scan tool, run a Vehicle Scan Report, or record the Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for at least 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION procedure. Refer to TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE FOR MECHANICAL ISSUES
- Turn the ignition off.
- Inspect the Transfer Case in accordance with the Service Information to determine if there are any mechanical conditions that are preventing the Shift Motor from engaging the requested range. Remove the Transfer Case Shift Motor and inspect the shift mechanism to determine if a mechanical condition exists with the Transfer Case.
Were any mechanical issues found?
Yes
- Repair or replace the Transfer Case in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the DTCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to DTCM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFT MOTOR FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect all wiring and connectors that pertain to this circuit.
- If any problems are found, repair as necessary and retest.
- If no problems were found, replace the Transfer Case Shift Motor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MOTOR, SHIFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- With the scan tool, erase the DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Transfer Case in accordance with the Service information. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONREMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the DTCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to DTCM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repairing the wiring condition or replacing the Transfer Case Shift Motor corrected the condition.
- Perform the DTCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to DTCM VERIFICATION TEST .
