Removal And Installation
REMOVAL
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to the appropriate service information .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE
.
- Place an oil drain pan under the drain plug, remove the drain plug (1) and drain the transmission fluid.
- Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
- Remove the engine mount insulator. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, LEFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONINSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, RIGHT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONINSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, LEFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONINSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, RIGHT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the catalytic converter assembly. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Mark the transfer case flanges and the propeller shafts for installation reference before removing the propeller shafts. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the transfer case

CAUTION:Bore scope inspection required to ensure clutch fork to slave cylinder alignment. Failure to inspect and verify proper seating of the slave may result in transmission damage or loss of clutch function.
- Remove the clutch slave cylinder. Refer to CYLINDER, CLUTCH SLAVE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Disconnect the transmission neutral safety switch wire harness connector (1).
- Disconnect the transmission range position switch wire harness connector (1).
- Remove the starter
Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONSTARTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
CAUTION:If any of the shift cables or shift cable brackets are removed, the cable adjustment must be checked. This adjustment is critical. If not set correctly, transmission damage is possible.
- Using a suitable tool, disconnect the shift cables (1) from the outer shift lever ball stud. Mark or scribe the bracket (2) in two places before removing so it can be re-installed in the EXACT location in which it was originally mounted. Position the cables (1) away from the transmission with the bracket (2).
- Remove the RH fuel vapor line fasteners from the vapor line brackets and position the fuel vapor lines aside.
- Remove the two top fuel vapor line fasteners from the vapor line brackets and position the fuel vapor lines aside.
- Remove the transmission vent tube and position it aside.
- Remove the eight transmission to engine mounting bolts (1).
- Move the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch disc and the pressure plate.
- Lower the transmission jack and remove the transmission.
INSTALLATION
- Apply a very light coat of Mopar® high temperature bearing grease or equivalent to the input shaft splines.
- Clean the transmission front housing mounting surface.
- Check the alignment of the clutch. Refer to DISC, CLUTCH, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Support and secure the transmission to the transmission jack.
- Install the transmission. Tighten the bolts (1) to the proper
Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

- Install the RH fuel vapor line fasteners and brackets to the transmission.
- Install the two top fuel vapor line fasteners and brackets to the transmission.
- Install the transmission vent tube.
- Install the clutch slave cylinder. Refer to CYLINDER, CLUTCH SLAVE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONSTARTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the transfer case
Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONREMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
CAUTION:If any of the shift cables or shift cable brackets are removed, the cable adjustment must be checked. This adjustment is critical. If not set correctly, transmission damage is possible.
- Install the shift cable bracket (2) to the EXACT position to which it was originally mounted. Align the marks made on the shift cable bracket from the removal procedure, install the fasteners and tighten to the correct. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the shift cables (1) to the shift cable bracket and connect the cables to the transmission.
- Route and attach the wiring harnesses to the clips located on the case.
- Connect the transmission range position switch wire harness connector (1).
- Connect the transmission neutral safety switch wire harness connector (1).
- Install the front and rear drive shafts with the reference marks aligned. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the catalytic converter. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the engine mount insulator. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, LEFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONINSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, RIGHT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONINSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, LEFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONINSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, RIGHT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the transmission fill procedure. Refer to FLUID, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
- If the transmission is being removed and installed, position the shifter in 3rd gear and push the select cable adjustment button. If the transmission is being replaced. Refer to CABLE, GEARSHIFT CONTROL, ADJUSTMENTS .
- Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to the appropriate service information .
