Difficult Shifting

DIFFICULT SHIFTER OPERATION

  1. The engagement of the gears is difficult in every condition.
    CHECK SHIFTER CABLE HARDWARE EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Check for any obstruction of the shifter. Check the routing of the shifter cables and the attachment to the transmission and the shifter. Continue to Step 2 Cables not properly fitted Remove any gear shifter obstructions. Restore the proper routing and attachment of the shifter cables. Refer to CABLE, GEARSHIFT CONTROL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  2. CHECK SHIFTER CABLES EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Check for proper shifter cable adjustment. Check the condition of the shifter cables. Shifter cables are out of adjustment. Re-adjust the shifter cables. Refer to CABLE, GEARSHIFT CONTROL, ADJUSTMENTS .
    Check the shifter cables for worn spherical ends or bushings. Continue to Step 3 Spherical ends worn or damaged. Replace the shifter cables. Refer to CABLE, GEARSHIFT CONTROL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. CHECK THE SHIFT LEVER EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Check the ball joint of the gear lever: must not be worn out. End diagnosis Spherical end worn out Replace the shifter. Refer to LEVER, SHIFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

SHIFTING INTO GEAR DIFFICULT

  1. Shifting gears is sometimes difficult, gear clash heard when shifting.
    PRELIMINARY CHECKS EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Check for proper shift cable adjustment. Check clutch disengagement Shifter cables are out of adjustment. Re-adjust the shifter cables. Refer to CABLE, GEARSHIFT CONTROL, ADJUSTMENTS .
    Check for proper clutch disengagement: with the engine running depress the clutch pedal and engage a gear. Continue to Step 2 Gear clash when shifting Diagnose clutch. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
  2. CHECK SYNCHRONIZER RINGS EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Check for proper clutch disengagement. With the engine running, depress the clutch pedal and engage a gear. Visually inspect the synchronizers Worn synchronizers Replace synchronizers
    Inspect the synchronizers. Check the synchronizer rings: must not show signs of wear on the inner surfaces and not show signs of wear or discoloration from heat. Continue to Step 3 Worn synchronizers Replace synchronizers
  3. CHECK GEAR SELECTION EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Verify the integrity of the springs and the bearings inside the transmission. Continue to Step 4 Damaged springs or bearings Replace damaged components
  4. CHECK GEARS EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Inspect the gears. Check the front teeth of the gears for nicks or excessive wear. Continue to Step 5 Worn gears Replace the damaged or worn gears.
  5. CHECK SYNCHRONIZER HUBS AND SLIDING SLEEVES EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Inspect the sliding sleeves and hubs for nicks, wear, or excessive play. Sleeves and hubs must move freely. End diagnosis Worn sleeves or hubs Replace the worn sleeves or hubs.

VAGUE GEAR ENGAGEMENT FEEL

  1. The gear selection is not precise. There is excessive play in the gear shifter and an abnormal return of the lever in neutral.
    CHECK GEAR SELECTION EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Verify the shifter assembly is moving freely. Check condition of springs and bearings Damaged shifter assembly. Replace the shifter assembly. Refer to LEVER, SHIFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
    Verify the integrity of the springs and the bearing for the transmission. Continue to Step 2 Damaged springs or bearings Replace damaged components.
  2. CHECK SHIFTER CABLES EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Check for proper shifter cable adjustment. Check condition of shifter cables Shift cables are out of adjustment. Re-adjust the shift cables. Refer to CABLE, GEARSHIFT CONTROL, ADJUSTMENTS .
    Check the shifter cables for worn spherical ends or bushings. Continue to Step 3 Spherical ends worn or damaged. Replace the shifter cables. Refer to CABLE, GEARSHIFT CONTROL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. CHECK THE SHIFT LEVER EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION
    Check the ball joint of the gear lever for wear. End diagnosis Spherical end worn out Replace the shifter. Refer to LEVER, SHIFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
