Description And Operation
The airbag system is a sensitive, complex electro-mechanical unit. Before attempting to diagnose, remove or install the airbag system components you must first disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable. Then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge. Failure to do so could result in accidental deployment of the airbag and possible personal injury. The fasteners, screws, and bolts, originally used for the airbag components, have special coatings and are specifically designed for the airbag system. They must never be replaced with any substitutes. Anytime a new fastener is needed, replace with the correct fasteners provided in the service package or fasteners listed in the parts books.
Do not hammer on steering column shaft. This may cause damage to the column internally.
This vehicle is equipped with a tilt/telescoping type steering column. When the lever is in the released position, the column can be tilted or telescoped manually.
The column has been designed to be serviced as an assembly less wiring, switches, steering wheel, and others. The shaft, bearings, and intermediate shaft are all serviced with the column as an assembly.
There are no serviceable components on the steering column.
The major components on the steering column assembly are:
- Clockspring - Integral to the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) (1)
- Multifunction Switches (left and right) - Integral to the SCCM (2)
- Driver Airbag (3)
- Steering Wheel (4)
- Shrouds (5)
When servicing any component of the steering column, refer to Restraints and observe all WARNINGS and CAUTIONS. Refer to WARNING .
