Exterior Mirrors: Notes

DESCRIPTION

The interior and exterior power mirror systems are comprised of the following components:

COMPONENT INDEX

1. Refer to BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) .
2. Refer to POWER EXTERIOR REARVIEW MIRROR .
3. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) .
4. Refer to POWER MIRROR SWITCH .

On vehicles equipped with the Electrochromatic (EC) mirror, the EC feature automatically changes reflectance of the internal mirror to provide maximum night vision, while giving relief from glare by headlamps from the rear of the vehicle during night driving.

An ambient photo-light sensor indicates the light intensity in front of the driver and from behind the driver. The ambient photo-light sensor is located behind the glass on the face of the mirror and is not visible. There is no switch or hard button on the mirror to turn the EC function on or off. When the difference between the two light levels becomes too great (the light level received at the rear of the mirror is much higher than that at the front of the mirror), the mirror begins to darken. The mirror also monitors the backup lamp circuit, and will automatically disable its self-dimming feature whenever the transmission gear position is in the REVERSE.

OPERATION

Bus Communication

The BCM determines the ignition status and the gear status based on their associated Controller Area Network (CAN) signals. The BCM will transmit the enable/disable signal over the Local Interface Network (LIN) bus to the interior mirror. The EC mirror will read the internal signal for the sensor values and determine the ratio between the forward and backward light intensity, along with the enable signal coming from the BCM, to determine the reflecting mode. The EC mirror then sends the internal EC mirror status signal over the LIN bus. The BCM receives the signal from the EC mirror and determine if errors have been reported.
