Diagnostic Test

  1. ANTENNA INSPECTION 
    1. Using Service Information locate and verify the antenna is on the vehicle.
    2. Visually inspect the Antenna for damage.

      Is the antenna missing or damaged?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To the appropriate information
  2. CHECK THE ANTENNA CONNECTIONS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Radio Antenna connector at the Antenna.
    3. Disconnect the Radio Antenna connector at the rear of the Radio.
    4. Inspect both of the Radio Antenna connections and verify the Antenna is torqued to specification.

      Were the antenna connections clean and torqued to specification?

      Yes 

      • Go To the appropriate information

      No 

      • Clean the antenna connection(s) / torque to specification as necessary.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  3. RADIO 
    NOTE:

    Antenna reception testing

    must

    be done outside and away from man made structures or natural features to ensure all signals are not obstructed.

    1. Connect the (special tool #9977-6-FM, Antenna) to the Radio C3 component connector.
    2. Place the test antenna base on the roof of the vehicle.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Drive the vehicle outside to an un-obstructed area.
    5. Turn the Radio on and select several different known good stations from the AM and FM bands.
    6. Note any of the following type of reception concerns being heard:
      • Silence
      • Static
      • Noise
      • Popping
      • Screeching
      • Hissing
      • Crackling
      • Humming
      • Weak Signal
      • Interference
      • Motor Sound

      Is the audio reception still poor or not available?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Radio in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. ANTENNA 
    NOTE:

    Antenna reception testing

    must

    be done outside and away from man made structures or natural features to ensure all signals are not obstructed.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Reconnect the Radio C3 harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the Radio Antenna harness connector.
    4. Connect the (special tool #9977-6-FM, Antenna) to the Radio Antenna harness connector.
    5. Turn the Radio on and select several different known good stations from the AM and FM bands.
    6. Note any of the following type of reception concerns being heard:
      • Silence
      • Static
      • Noise
      • Popping
      • Screeching
      • Hissing
      • Crackling
      • Humming
      • Weak Signal
      • Interference
      • Motor Sound

      Is the audio reception still poor or not available?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Replace the Radio Antenna in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. ANTENNA CABLE

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the (special tool #9977-6-FM, Antenna) from the Radio Antenna harness connector.
    3. Connect the appropriate (special tool #9977-6-4, Jumper) (1) or (special tool #9977-6-2, Jumper) (1) to the Radio Antenna harness connector (2) at the Antenna.

    4. Disconnect the Radio C3 harness connector.
    5. Connect the appropriate (special tool #9977-6-1, Adapter) (1) or (special tool #9977-6-3, Adapter) (1) to the Radio C3 harness connector (2).
    6. Measure the resistance across the tool terminals.

      Is the resistance between 47.5 and 52.5 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • The source of the poor reception is not caused by the Radio, Antenna Cable or Radio Antenna.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Replace the Antenna Cable in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
