Differential Assembly
The differential unit can be placed on tool (special tool #6888, Installer, Seal) as a stable holding fixture.
- Clean the differential components with suitable solvent and blow then dry with 344 kPa (50 psi) shop air. Inspect the differential components for excess wear or damage. Replace the differential if damage is apparent.
- Install the differential side gear (1) and thrust washer (2) into the differential housing (3).
- Insert the pinion shaft (2) into its bore in the differential housing.
- Slide the pinion shaft (2) inward and install the conical thrust washer (1).
- Slide the pinion shaft (2) inward and install one pinion gear (1).
- Slide the pinion shaft (2) inward and install the other pinion gear (1).
- Slide the pinion shaft (4) inward and install the conical thrust washer (1) behind the pinion gear (2).
- Align the hole in the pinion shaft with the hole in the differential housing (2) and install the lock-pin (1) to hold the pinion shaft in the differential housing.
- Install the differential side gear (1) and thrust washer (2) into the differential housing (3).
- Place the upper half (1) housing on the lower differential housing (2).
- Place the ring gear (1) in position on the differential housing (2).
- Install the bolts (2) to hold the ring gear (1) to the differential housing.
- Tighten the ring gear bolts (4) to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Place the differential housing (1) in position in the transmission.
- Install the bellhousing. Refer to BELLHOUSING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the transmission in the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
