Description And Operation

DESCRIPTION

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (1) is located next to the engine compartment battery. The PCM is a digital computer containing a microcontroller. The PCM receives input signals from various switches and sensors that are referred to as PCM Inputs. Based on these inputs, the PCM adjusts various engine and vehicle operations through devices that are referred to as PCM Outputs. The PCM performs diagnostics on the engine input and output components. The PCM uses the Controller Area Network (CAN) C bus to send and receive data from other modules on the bus.

OPERATION  - The PCM operates the following:

The PCM can adapt its programming to meet changing operating conditions.

The PCM will operate in two different modes:

By monitoring the exhaust oxygen content through the O2 Sensor and all other inputs, the PCM has the ability to fine tune the air handling, fuel control, ignition timing and spark advance settings. This is done to achieve optimum fuel economy combined with low emission engine performance.

NOTE:

Depending on vehicle build configuration, transmission and engine type the PCM will be programed with different software to meet the vehicle system needs. It is always important to verify the vehicles VIN number and software level in the PCM when diagnosing concerns related to the PCM.
