Removal And Installation: Installation

WARNING:

Hoisting and jack lift points provided in this service information are for a complete vehicle. When the transaxle is removed, the center of gravity will shift to the rear of the vehicle, possibly creating an unstable condition. Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicle. Personal injury may result if safety stands are not used.

  1. Visually inspect the flexplate for damage.
  2. Lightly grease the torque converter hub pocket in the end of the crankshaft.
    NOTE:

    The close tolerance torque converter bolt hole is oval shaped, and will aid in aligning the flexplate to the torque converter if the torque converter bolt is installed in this location first.

  3. Rotate the flexplate so the close tolerance torque converter bolt hole, recognized by the flat sides (1), is at the six o' clock position.
  4. While guiding the transmission past obstacles, jack the transmission upward until the engine and the transmission are in line.
  5. Push the bell housing against the engine block until the guide pins engage.

  6. Install the transmission to engine bolt (1) above the transmission cooler (2) hand tight.

  7. Install the front engine block to transmission bolt hand tight (1).

  8. Install the starter (2) in the starter pocket and install the lower starter bolt (1) hand tight.

  9. Install the bolts (1, 2) to hold the oil pan to the bellhousing and tighten all installed bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Install the front suspension crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  11. Remove the transmission jack from under the vehicle.

    CAUTION:

    It is essential that correct length bolts be used to attach the converter to the driveplate. Failure to follow this caution may result in transmission damage.

  12. Through the access door opening, install NEW  torque converter bolts (1) hand tight. Rotate the crankshaft to bring each set of bolts into view through the access door.
    NOTE:

    There are three pairs of bolts 120° apart attaching the flexplate to the torque converter.

  13. Use an appropriate wrench (2) on the damper bolt (1) to rotate the crankshaft to install all the torque converter bolts.
  14. Tighten all the torque converter bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  15. Install the torque converter bolt access cover (2) and tighten the bolt (1) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  16. Install the exhaust pipe bracket bolt (3) to the transmission and tighten to the proper

    Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  17. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

  18. Install the left upper transmission to engine bolt (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  19. Install the right upper transmission to engine bolt (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  20. Install the upper starter bolt (2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  21. Install the left engine to the transmission mount adapter (2) and tighten the bolts (1) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  22. Install the left side engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, LEFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, LEFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, LEFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  23. Remove the (special tool #8534C, Fixture, Driveline Support) (1) and chain (2).
  24. Install the upper fender closeout panels. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, FRONT WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  25. Install the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  26. Attach the transmission vent (1) to the hose clip (2) as shown.
  27. Raise the vehicle.
  28. Place the ground cable in position on the transmission tighten the bolt to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  29. Install the left inner splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, FRONT WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or SHIELD, SPLASH, REAR WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  30. Install the coolant tube bracket bolt (1).
  31. Install the transmission cooler coolant hoses and secure the clamps (2).
  32. Install the left and right half shafts. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  33. Install the front fascia

    Refer to FASCIA, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  34. Position the shifter cable into the bracket (2).

  35. Push the shifter cable end (1) to the manual lever.

  36. Connect the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (2) wire harness connector (1).
  37. Install the battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  38. Fill the transmission to the proper level with the specified fluid. Refer to FLUID, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  39. Install the engine cover. Refer to COVER, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or COVER, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or COVER, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  40. If transmission is replaced or internal repairs were made, perform Transmission Verification Test-948TE. Refer to appropriate service information .
