Cable, Shift: Removal

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.

  3. Using (special tool #C-4755, Trim Stick) or equivalent, remove the front trim (3) covering the console fasteners.

  4. Detach the shifter bezel (1) from the console bezel using (special tool #C-4755, Trim Stick) or equivalent, pry up on the bezel (1).
    NOTE:

    Do not remove the shifter bezel, as it will fit through the opening in the console bezel when it is removed.

  5. Place the shifter in the Neutral position by manually releasing the Brake Ignition Transmission Shift Interlock (BITSI)

    Refer to SHIFT, BRAKE INTERLOCK, STANDARD PROCEDURE .

  6. Using (special tool #C-4755, Trim Stick) or equivalent, separate the console bezel (1) and disconnect the wire harness connectors (2).
  7. Remove the console bezel.
  8. Place the shifter in Park position.

  9. Disconnect the shifter cable (1) from the shifter (2).

  10. Release the lock (3) holding the shifter cable (4) to the shifter bracket (1).
  11. Separate the shifter cable (4) from the shifter bracket (1).
  12. Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL .
  13. Remove the PCM bracket from the battery tray.

  14. Separate the shifter cable end (1) from the manual lever (2) on the transmission.

  15. Release the lock (2) holding the shifter cable (1) to the shift cable bracket (3) on the transmission.
  16. Separate the shifter cable (1) from the shift cable bracket (3).
  17. Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .

  18. Remove the exhaust heat shield (1) nuts (2) and lower heat shield to gain access to the shifter cable and grommet.

  19. Detach the shifter cable from the support bracket (1).
    NOTE:

    Exhaust and heat shield removed for clarity.

  20. Detach the shifter cable grommet (2) from the floor pan.

  21. Detach the shifter cable from the clip (1) attached to the steering gear.

  22. Pull the shifter cable (1) through the floor pan.
  23. Disconnect the front sway bar links from the sway bar.

  24. Rotate the sway bar (1) for shifter cable (2) clearance.
  25. Remove the shifter cable from the vehicle.
