Diagnostic Test
- CHECK IF DTC IS CURRENT
- With the scan tool, read ESL DTCs.
- Record the Environmental Data and any DTCs.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read ESL DTCs.
Did the DTC reset?
Yes
- Go to 2.
No
- Go to 10.
- CHECK FOR POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) CHARGING SYSTEM DTCS
- With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.
Does the scan tool display any PCM charging system related DTCs?
Yes
- Repair PCM Charging System related DTCs. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information .
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 3.
- With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.
- CHECK FUSES
- CHECK (Z917) GROUND CIRCUIT
- Reinstall fuses if removed.
- Turn the Ignition Switch OFF.
- Disconnect the ESL Module harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (Z917) circuit.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go to 5.
No
- Repair the open or high resistance in the (Z917) ground circuit.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK (A910) BATTERY SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the Ignition ON, Engine not running.
- Measure the voltage between (A910) Battery Supply circuit and ground.
Is the voltage above 9 volts?
Yes
- Go to 6.
No
- Repair the open or high resistance in the (A910) Battery Supply circuit.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK (F944) IGNITION VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the voltage between (F944) Ignition Voltage Supply circuit and ground.
Is the voltage above 9 volts?
Yes
- Go to 7.
No
- Repair the (F944) Ignition Voltage Supply circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the voltage between (F944) Ignition Voltage Supply circuit and ground.
- CHECK (A910) BATTERY SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (F944) IGNITION VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT
- Turn the Ignition Switch OFF.
- Remove fuses F67 (15A) and F23 (10A).
- Measure the resistance between the (A910) circuit and the (F944) circuit at the ESL Module harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (A910) circuit and the (F944) circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (A910) circuit and the (F944) circuit for a short to each other.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the ESL Module in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK (A910) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the Ignition Switch OFF.
- Remove fuse F67 (15A).
- Disconnect the ESL Module harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (A910) Battery Supply circuit at the ESL Module harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between the (A910) Battery Supply circuit and all other circuits in the ESL Module harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (A910) Battery Supply circuit and ground or another circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (A910) Battery Supply circuit for a short to ground or another circuit.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 9.
- CHECK (F944) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Remove fuse F23 (10A).
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (F944) Ignition Supply circuit at the ESL Module harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between the (F944) Ignition Supply circuit and all other circuits in the ESL Module harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (F944) Ignition Supply circuit and ground or another circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (F944) Ignition Supply circuit for a short to ground or another circuit.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the ESL Module in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK WIRING AND CONNECTORS
- The conditions necessary to set the DTC are not present at this time.
- Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors specific to this circuit.
- Wiggle the wires while checking for shorted and open circuits.
- Check for any Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were there any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test. Refer to ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Test complete.
