PTU Assembly

NOTE:

One speed shown in illustration, two speed similar.

NOTE:

Do not use solvent to clean the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) components. Clean the PTU components using a lint free cloth.

  1. Inspect all sealing surfaces for excessive wear or scratches that may cause damage to new seals. If damage is evident replace the PTU assembly.
  2. Manual Transmission equipped vehicle only; using tool (special tool #10517, Installer, Seal) (1), with the long side (4) toward the seal (2), install the outer seal (2) in the input shaft (3) with the tension spring facing outward. The shoulder on the tool will stop against the input shaft (3) when the seal is fully seated.
  3. Both Automatic and Manual Transmission equipped vehicles; using tool (special tool #10517, Installer, Seal) (1), with the short side (4) toward the seal (2), install the inner seal (2) in the input gear (3) with the tension spring facing the tool. The shoulder on the tool will stop against the input shaft (3) when the seal is fully seated.

  4. Manual transmission equipped vehicle only; using tool (special tool #10515, Installer, Seal) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (3), with the long side (2) toward the outer seal (1), install the outer seal (1) in the housing (4) with the tension spring facing outward. The shoulder on the tool will stop against the top of the bore in the housing (4) when the seal is fully seated.
  5. For both automatic and manual transmission equipped vehicles; using tool (special tool #10515, Installer, Seal) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (3), with the short side (2) toward the seal (1), install the inner seal (1) in the housing (4) with the tension spring facing the tool. The shoulder on the tool will stop against the top of the bore in the housing (4) when the seal is fully seated.

  6. Install the input shaft (1) and bearing in the PTU housing.

  7. Install the dog clutch sleeve (1) onto the input shaft.

    NOTE:

    Ensure that the dog clutch sleeve is oriented so that the tapered splines (1) are facing the input gear (towards the interior of the case).

  8. In unison, install the input gear (1) and output ring gear (2) in the PTU housing.

  9. Install the gasket (1) in the groove in the PTU housing (2).

  10. If necessary, install the bearing cups and shims in their proper bore of the right PTU housing. Use a light grease to retain the cups in their bore.
  11. Place the right housing (1) on the PTU housing (2).

  12. Install the fasteners (1) to hold the PTU housing halves together and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  13. If removed, install a NEW  output shaft seal. Refer to SEAL, AXLE DRIVE SHAFT, OUTER, INSTALLATION .
  14. Install the output shaft and bearing back in the case. It may be necessary to gently tap the output shaft once the splines are aligned to fully seat it.

  15. Install a NEW  inner (3) and outer (2) snap ring in the PTU case.
  16. Install the PTU in the vehicle. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  17. Fill the PTU to the proper level. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  18. Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
