Tank, Fuel: Removal

NOTE:

Saddle style fuel tank shown in illustration. Standard fuel tank is similar.

WARNING:

The fuel system is under constant pressure even with engine off. Until the fuel pressure has been properly relieved from the system, do not attempt to open the fuel system. Do not smoke or use open flames/sparks when servicing the fuel system. Wear protective clothing and eye protection. Make sure the area in which the vehicle is being serviced is in a well ventilated area.

  1. Perform the draining fuel tank procedure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM/FUEL DELIVERY/STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the rear seat. Refer to SEAT, REAR, REMOVAL .

  4. Remove screws and lift up on the fuel pump module access cover (3, 4) and disconnect the wire harness connector (2, 6).

    WARNING:

    Risk of injury to eyes and skin from contact with fuel. Wear protective clothing and eye protection. Risk of poisoning from inhaling and swallowing fuel. Pour fuel only into appropriately marked and approved containers. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

  5. Disconnect the fuel tank vapor line (1, 2) from fuel pump module. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM/FUEL DELIVERY/FITTING, QUICK CONNECT - STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  6. Disconnect the supply line quick connect fitting (3) from fuel pump module. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM/FUEL DELIVERY/FITTING, QUICK CONNECT - STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  7. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  8. Remove the exhaust system. Refer to REMOVAL .
  9. AWD ONLY:  remove the rear propeller shaft assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .

  10. Loosen the hose clamp (2) and remove the fuel filler tube (3) from the fuel tank (1).

  11. If equipped, remove the skid plates (3).

  12. Use a transmission jack to support fuel tank.
  13. Remove the left fuel tank strap bolt (1).

  14. Remove the right fuel tank strap bolt (1).

  15. Remove bolts (1) and the left fuel tank strap (3).
  16. Remove bolts (1) and the right fuel tank strap (2).
  17. Lower fuel tank from vehicle.
  18. If fuel tank is to be replaced, remove heat shield from fuel tank.
