Removal And Installation
REMOVAL
- The water pump on 3.6L engines is bolted directly to the engine timing chain case cover.
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECTION
.WARNING:
Constant tension hose clamps are used on most cooling system hoses. When removing or installing, use only tools designed for servicing this type of clamp. Always wear safety glasses when servicing constant tension clamps.
CAUTION:A number or letter is stamped into the tongue of constant tension clamps. If replacement is necessary, use only an original equipment clamp with matching number or letter.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING .
- Remove the generator and bracket. Refer to REMOVAL
.
- Remove the bolt (1) and the left idler pulley (2).
- Remove the coolant hose (1) and the lower radiator hose (2).CAUTION:
Do not pry on the water pump at the timing chain case/cover. The machined surfaces may be damaged resulting in leaks.
NOTE:Take notice to the M6 water pump bolts that mount directly to the timing chain cover.
- Remove the M6 and M8 bolts (1) and the water pump (2).
- Remove and discard the water pump gasket.
INSTALLATION
The water pump on 3.6L engines is bolted directly to the engine timing chain case cover.
- Clean the gasket mating surfaces.NOTE:
Take notice to the lengths of the mounting bolts. Some M6 bolts mount directly to the timing cover.
- Using a NEW gasket, install water pump (2) and tighten the M6, and M8 bolts (1) finger tight.
- Using the tightening sequence shown above, tighten the bolts (1 - 9) to their proper torque:
- Tighten the M6 bolts (1 - 8) to 11 N.m (8 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten the M8 bolt (9) to 23 N.m (17 ft. lbs.).
- Spin water pump to be sure that pump impeller does not rub against timing cover.
- Install the lower radiator hose (2) and the coolant hose (1).
- Install the left idler pulley (2) and tighten the bolt (1) to the proper specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the generator and bracket. Refer to INSTALLATION .
- Evacuate air and refill cooling system. Refer to COOLANT AIR EVACUATION , and STANDARD PROCEDURE - FILLING - 3.6L .
- Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECTION .
- Check the cooling system for leaks. Refer to LEAK TESTING .
