Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR INFORMATION RELATED TO THIS DTC
- Check for related Service Bulletins and Star Online Cases.
Were any related Service Bulletins or Star Online Cases available?
Yes
- Repair the condition by performing the related procedures outlined in the Service Bulletin or Star Online Case.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 2
- Check for related Service Bulletins and Star Online Cases.
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- PERFORM VISUAL INSPECTION OF CMP SENSOR, TARGET WHEEL, AND WIRE HARNESS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the harness connectors at the PCM and Camshaft Position Sensor and inspect for wire chaffing or rubbing conditions, terminals pushed out of the wiring connector, bent terminals at the PCM and Camshaft Position Sensor, water in the connector cavities, presence of corrosion on the terminals of the connectors or components.
- Visually inspect the mounting area of Camshaft Position Sensor for debris/damage or a loose sensor. Remove the Camshaft Position Sensor and inspect the end of the sensor for signs of damage or debris. Rotate the engine and if possible, inspect the target wheel for any signs of damage. Reinstall the Camshaft Position Sensor and ensure that the sensor is properly installed and torqued to proper specification.NOTE:
This DTC is set by an intermittent loss of the signal. The most likely cause is a poor connection at the Camshaft Position Sensor or PCM terminals, or a misalignment between the Camshaft Position Sensor and target wheel. Because of this, unplugging and reconnecting the harness connectors, or repositioning the Camshaft Position Sensor will often repair the condition that set the DTC.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 4
- CHECK THE VEHICLE REPAIR HISTORY
- Check the history of the vehicle for previous Camshaft Position Sensor related DTCs within the past 90 days.
Did the repair history show that the vehicle was in for a Camshaft Position Sensor fault within the past 90 days?
Yes
- Replace the Camshaft Position Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSITION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .The "Cam/Crank Relearn" Procedure must be performed every time there has been a repair/replacement made to a CMP Sensor and/or CKP sensor, flywheel, valvetrain, timing chain or gears. Failure to do so can cause a misfire fault to set. With the scan tool, perform the "Cam/Crank Relearn" Procedure.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the poor connections that likely caused this DTC to set. Connect the harness connectors, and erase the DTC. The most likely cause was a poor connection at one of the harness connectors. Verify the DTC does not return.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Check the history of the vehicle for previous Camshaft Position Sensor related DTCs within the past 90 days.
- CHECK THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage between the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts?
Yes
- Go to 6
No
- Go to 12
- CHECK THE (K441) CMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT VOLTAGE
- CHECK FOR THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K441) CMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K441) CMP Signal circuit at the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K441) CMP Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the (K441) CMP Signal circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 8
- INSPECT THE TONE WHEEL/PULSE RING FOR DAMAGE AND CONTAMINATION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the CMP Sensor.
- Visually inspect the sensor mounting location for damage, foreign material.
- Rotate the engine and if possible inspect the target wheel for any signs of damage.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair the sensor mounting issue. Repair or replace the Tone Wheel / Pulse Ring as necessary. The "Cam/Crank Relearn" Procedure must be performed every time there has been a repair/replacement made to a CMP Sensor and/or CKP sensor, flywheel, valvetrain, timing chain or gears. Failure to do so can cause a misfire fault to set. With the scan tool, perform the "Cam/Crank Relearn" Procedure.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- CHECK THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, WIRING, AND CONNECTIONS
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Camshaft Position Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Start the engine or crank the engine for ten seconds.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go to 10
No
- Repair the poor connections or wire problem.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- REPLACE THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND RETEST FOR DTCS
- Replace the Camshaft Position Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSITION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Connect the Camshaft Position Sensor and PCM C2 harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Freeze Frame Data and the When Monitored conditions above, operate the vehicle within the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go to 11
No
- Replacing the Camshaft Position Sensor repaired the fault.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Measure the voltage on the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 13
- Measure the voltage on the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 14
- CHECK FOR THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit in the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 15
- Check for continuity between the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit in the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
CAUTION:Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic)to the engine harness side of the PCM C2 harness connector. Do not connect the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to the PCM.
- Measure the resistance of the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit between the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go to 16
No
- Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit between the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go to 17
No
- Repair the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit between the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
- CHECK THE (K441) CMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage on the (K441) CMP Signal circuit in the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (K441) CMP Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 18
- CHECK THE (K441) CMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (K441) CMP Signal circuit at the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (K441) CMP Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K441) CMP Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 19
- CHECK FOR SHORT BETWEEN THE (K441) CMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED AND THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the (K441) CMP Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (K441) CMP Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K441) CMP Signal circuit for a short to the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 20
- Check for continuity between the (K441) CMP Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE (K441) CMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic)to the engine harness side of the PCM C2 harness connector. Do not connect the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to the PCM.
- Measure the resistance of the (K441) CMP Signal circuit between the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go to 21
No
- Repair the (K441) CMP Signal circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit between the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go to 22
No
- Repair the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit between the Camshaft Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
- INSPECT THE TONE WHEEL/PULSE RING FOR DAMAGE AND CONTAMINATION
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Remove the CMP Sensor.
- Visually inspect the sensor mounting location for damage, foreign material.
- Rotate the engine and if possible inspect the target wheel for any signs of damage.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair sensor mounting issue. Repair or replace the Tone Wheel / Pulse Ring as necessary. The "Cam/Crank Relearn" Procedure must be performed every time there has been a repair/replacement made to a CMP Sensor and/or CKP sensor, flywheel, valvetrain, timing chain or gears. - Go to 23
- CHECK THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, WIRING, AND CONNECTIONS
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Camshaft Position Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Start the engine or crank the engine for ten seconds.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go to 24
No
- Repair the poor connections or wire problem.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- REPLACE THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND RETEST FOR DTCS
- Replace the Camshaft Position Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSITION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Reconnect the Camshaft Position Sensor and PCM harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the Freeze Frame Data or When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle within the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go to 25
No
- Replacing the Camshaft Position Sensor repaired the fault.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
