Module, Electronic Steering Lock (ESL): Description
The Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) is part of the premium version of the Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) in the Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS). The premium version of the SKIS is only available in vehicles built for certain markets, where the additional features offered by this system are required. The module is located near the upper end of the steering column housing below the instrument panel in the passenger compartment.
The ESL includes a die cast aluminum cover that conceals and protects the electronic circuitry of the module, which includes a single integral connector receptacle (4). The electronics of the module are connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector of the instrument panel wire harness. The bi-directional electric motor that actuates the locking bolt (3) is also contained within a die cast metal housing. That housing includes an integral saddle type mounting bracket (2) that is clamped securely to the steering column housing by two tamper resistant screws.
The mounting provisions for the ESL are designed to resist unauthorized tampering. The module cannot be removed from the steering column while the steering column is installed in the vehicle. The ESL cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if ineffective or damaged it must be replaced.
