Housing, Steering Column Bearing: Installation: Installation

CAUTION:

When the steering column bearing (1) is installed into the steering column bearing housing (2), the arrow (4) will be lined up with the notched line (3) on the housing. Turning the bearing past the intended marks may cause damage.

  1. Place the new steering column bearing (1) into the steering column bearing housing (2) and carefully turn clockwise until a click is heard AND  the arrow (4) on the bearing and the tab (3) on the housing line up.

    NOTE:

    Make sure no insulation is between the housing and the cowl.

  2. Position the steering column bearing housing assembly (1) to the cowl, install the three bolts (2) and tighten to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.).
  3. Reposition the insulation as necessary.

    NOTE:

    Do not use any type of grease on the shaft and bushing. 

  4. Apply soapy water to the shaft and bushing and carefully install the shaft into the bushing.
  5. Install the upper intermediate shaft coupler (2) to the steering column.
  6. Install the coupler pinch bolt (1) and tighten to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).

  7. If equipped, position the lower panel and install the push in retainers (1).

  8. From the engine compartment, install the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt (3) and tighten to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).
  9. Remove the steering wheel retainer.
