Sensor, Occupant Detection: Removal: Removal

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

NOTE:

The Occupant Detection Sensor (ODS) is used only in the passenger side front seat of vehicles manufactured for export markets. Vehicles manufactured for domestic markets use the Occupant Classification System (OCS) instead of the ODS on the passenger side front seat.

  1. Position the passenger side front seat to its most forward position for easiest access to the front seat mounting hardware.
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
  3. Remove the passenger side front seat from the vehicle. Refer to SEAT, REMOVAL .
  4. Remove the trim from the front seat cushion foam (1) and frame. Refer to COVER, SEAT CUSHION, REMOVAL .
  5. If equipped, remove the heater and/or ventilation elements from the seat cushion foam. Refer to PAD, HEATER, REMOVAL .
  6. Reach under the seat cushion pan to access and disconnect the Occupant Detection Sensor (ODS) pigtail wire harness connector from the seat wire harness.
  7. Carefully disengage the adhesive patch (2) of the ODS mat (3) from the top surface of the seat cushion foam.
    NOTE:

Care must be taken not to pull off any of the seat cushion foam along with the ODS mat. If part of the seat cushion foam is removed with the mat, the entire seat cushion foam should be replaced.

  8. Extract the tail of the ODS and the sensor pigtail wire harness from the clearance hole in the seat cushion foam.
