Park Assist System
A Front and Rear Park Assist (FRPA) system is an optional factory-installed electronic parking aid. The system is available only as a combination of both the front and the rear park assist. During parking and other similar vehicle maneuvers, this system alerts the vehicle operator to the approximate relative distance of obstacles located in the paths immediately ahead of or immediately behind the vehicle which, due to the surrounding vehicle structures, might be otherwise difficult to perceive. When an obstacle is detected, the system uses graphics and chimes to provide the vehicle operator with visual and audible indications of the presence and Proximity of such objects.
The FRPA assist system includes the following major components, which are described in additional detail elsewhere in this service information:
- Body Control Module (BCM) - The BCM serves as the gateway between the Controller Area Network - Chassis (CAN-C) and the CAN - Interior High Speed (CAN-IHS) data bus networks used to communicate between the Park Assist Module (PAM), the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and the radio.
- IPC - In vehicles equipped with the FRPA system, the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) within the IPC displays vehicle graphics and amber or red arc sections that illustrate the approximate location of obstacles within the front or rear paths of the vehicle. The EVIC also displays textual warnings and error messages along with issuing audible alerts related to the current operating status of the FRPA system.
- PAM - Vehicles equipped with the FRPA system include a 10 channel PAM, which is secured with a plastic push-in fastener and a pocket slot in the quarter inner panel through two mounting tabs integral to the module housing to the vehicle body. Three connector receptacles are integral to one side of the housing and contain terminal pins that connect the module to the vehicle electrical system.
- Park Assist OFF Switch - The optional FRPA system can be manually disabled or enabled using a Park Assist OFF switch. The Park Assist OFF switch is integral to the Integrated Center Stack (ICS) and instrument panel trim bezel. This switch allows the operator to turn the FRPA system OFF.
- Park Assist Sensors - Vehicles equipped with the FRPA system have 10 ultrasonic park assist sensors. Four are concealed behind the rear bumper fascia and six are concealed behind the front bumper fascia. Only the sensor membrane is visible on the outer surface of the bumper fascia. Each sensor is snapped into an individual molded plastic mounting bracket located at horizontal intervals along the inside surfaces of the front and rear bumper fascias.
- Radio - In vehicles equipped with the FRPA system, the PAM sends electronic message requests to the radio to generate audible signals indicating the approximate distance of obstacles from the front and rear paths of the vehicle. The radio is capable of generating repetitive single chime tones at several varying frequencies or continuous tones through the front or rear audio system speakers. If the audio system speakers are already in use, the radio will mute that output during chime tone generation. In addition, the radio touch screen display provides an interface that allows the vehicle operator to adjust the system chime volume settings (Low, Medium or High with Medium being the default setting) or the system operating mode (Sound And Display or Sound Only with Sound and Display being the default setting) using the customer programmable features option.
Hard wired circuitry connects the various FRPA system components to each other through the electrical system of the vehicle. These hardwired circuits are integral to several wire harnesses, which are routed throughout the vehicle and retained by many different methods. These circuits may be connected to each other and to the vehicle electrical system through the use of a combination of soldered splices, splice block connectors, and many different types of wire harness terminal connectors and insulators. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The wiring information includes wiring diagrams, details of wire harness routing and retention, connector pin-out information and location views for the various wire harness connectors, splices and grounds. For proper wire repair, and connector repair procedures. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE , REMOVAL , and INSTALLATION .
The FRPA system components cannot be adjusted or repaired. If any of the FRPA system components are damaged or ineffective, that component must be replaced.
