SHAFT, Intermediate: Removal: 3.7L
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove knee blocker cover and knee blocker. Refer to KNEEBLOCKER, Removal
.NOTE:
The steering column on vehicles with an automatic transmission may not be equipped with an internal locking shaft that allows the ignition key cylinder to be locked with the key. Alternative methods of locking the steering wheel for service will have to be used.
- Lock the steering wheel with the tires in the straight ahead position.
- Remove the lower column pinch bolt (2).
- Lower the steering coupler (1) shaft from the column.
- Remove the intermediate shaft seal by pushing in the four tangs (2) securing it to the panel.
Remove the nuts (2) for the intermediate shaft support bearing (1).
- Remove the center support bearing bracket (3) from the mount on the shock tower (4) using a ratchet (1) with an extension (2).
- Remove the nuts from the shock tower if removing the bracket.
- Remove the lower coupler pinch bolt (3) at the steering gear.
- Remove the coupler (2) at the steering gear.
- Remove the intermediate shaft (1) from the vehicle.
- Remove the center support bearing from the steering shaft (if replacing the intermediate shaft).
