Diesel Engine
Fig 1: Identifying Catalytic Converter, Turbocharger Heat Shield, Catalytic Converter Band Clamp & Upstream Temperature Sensor
WARNING:
The normal operating temperature of the exhaust system is very high. Therefore, never attempt to service any part of the exhaust system until it is cooled. Special care should be taken when working near the catalytic converter. The temperature of the converter rises to a high level after a short period of engine operation time.
- Remove engine trim cover.
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
- Remove the turbocharger heat shield (2).
- Remove the upstream temperature sensor from the catalytic converter.
- Remove the catalytic converter to steady rest bracket bolt.
- Loosen the turbocharger to catalytic converter band clamp (1).
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the belly pan from the vehicle. Refer to BELLY PAN, Removal .
- Remove the right side half shaft and axle. Refer to Removal or Removal or Removal .
- Remove the downstream temperature sensor (2) from the catalytic converter.
- Remove the catalytic converter to diesel particulate filter (DPF) flange mounting nuts and gasket. Discard the gasket.
- Remove the catalytic converter from underneath the vehicle.
NOTE:
When replacement is required on any component of the exhaust system, original equipment parts (or equivalent) must be used.
