Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) (Service Information): Removal: Removal

NOTE: When CVT transaxle is replaced, an initialization sequence must be performed between the Valve Body Module and the TCM. If the initialization sequence is not performed, transaxle may default into "limp in" mode. Ensure the scan tool you are using has the capabilities and software to perform the initialization sequence.
  1. Disconnect battery cables (2).
  2. Remove air cleaner assembly (1).

  3. Remove battery.

  4. Remove battery tray (1).
  5. Drain coolant. Refer to Standard Procedure .

  6. Remove inlet air tube (1).
  7. Remove vacuum supply lines.

  8. Remove the shifter cable (2) and bracket (3).

  9. With fluid cooler  , disconnect the coolant hoses (1) and the transmission fluid lines (2). Refer to TUBES AND HOSES, Transmission Oil Cooler, Standard Procedure .

  10. With bypass valve  , disconnect the transmission fluid lines (1). Refer to TUBES AND HOSES, Transmission Oil Cooler, Standard Procedure .
  11. Remove heater hose.

  12. Remove the speed sensor connector (1).

  13. Remove the wiring harness from the top of the transmission (2).
  14. Remove the transmission vent tube (1).

  15. Remove the throttle body support bracket (1).

  16. Remove the upper bell housing bolts (1).

  17. Remove the upper transmission mount bolts (1).
  18. Remove the upper transmission mount through bolt.
  19. Remove the upper transmission mount (2).
  20. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
  21. Drain transmission fluid.
  22. Remove the front skid plate, if equipped.
  23. Remove the left and right front lower splash shields.

  24. Support the transmission with a jack (1).
  25. Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, Removal .

  26. Remove the two transmission fill tube bolts (2) and remove the fill tube.
  27. Drain the transmission fluid.
  28. Remove both front wheels.
  29. Remove the right and left halfshafts. Refer to Removal and Removal and Removal .

  30. Remove inspection cover (1).
  31. Mark the torque converter to the flex plate for alignment upon installation.

  32. Remove torque converter bolts (1).

  33. Support the engine with a screw jack (2).

  34. Remove the through bolt (1) at the front transmission mount.
  35. Remove bolts (2) at the transmission cross member.
  36. Remove the transmission cross member.

  37. Remove the transmission rear mount thorough bolt (2).

  38. Remove the rear mount to transaxle bolts (1).
  39. Remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU), if equipped. Refer to Removal .

  40. Remove the lower transmission bell housing bolts (2).
  41. Lower transmission.
