WHEEL, Steering: Installation: Installation

CAUTION:

Do not install the steering wheel onto the shaft of the steering column by driving it onto the shaft.

NOTE:

Do not reuse the old steering wheel bolt, a new bolt must be used every time.

  1. Confirm that:
    1. The front wheels are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
    2. The turn signal stalk is in the NEUTRAL position.
  2. Align the wide mounting spline of the steering wheel (2) with the missing spline area of the steering column shaft (1) and push the wheel onto the shaft. Make sure the clockspring lines up with the back of the wheel and does not bind.
  3. Install a NEW  steering wheel retaining bolt (4) and tighten 50 N.m (37 ft. lbs.).

  4. Connect the wiring connector (2) at the clockspring.

  5. Install the driver airbag (3). Refer to AIR BAG, Driver, Installation .
    WARNING:

    Do not reconnect the battery without first performing the Airbag System Test procedure. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing . Failure to perform the Airbag System Test may result in accidental airbag deployment and serious or fatal injury.

  6. Reconnect the battery using the Airbag System Test procedure. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing .
  7. Verify vehicle and system operation.
