Diagnostic Test
- INTAKE SYSTEM LEAK OR RESTRICTION NOTE: This DTC will set due to poor engine performance as well as a faulty O2 Sensor. If the vehicle exhibits any fuel system or driveability issues, or has any other driveability DTCs present, repair those concerns before proceeding with this test.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Perform a thorough inspection of the intake system. Look for any leaks or restrictions. Pay special attention to the Charge Air Cooler and hoses.
Were any leaks or restrictions found?
Yes
- Repair the leak or restriction in the intake system.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure .
No
- Go to step 2
- EXHAUST SYSTEM LEAK OR RESTRICTION
- Perform a thorough inspection of the exhaust system. Look for any leaks or restrictions.
Were any leaks or restrictions found?
Yes
- Repair the leak or restriction in the exhaust system.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure .
No
- Go to step 3
- Perform a thorough inspection of the exhaust system. Look for any leaks or restrictions.
- POOR EGR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
- Perform the CHECKING THE EGR SYSTEM performance test. Refer to Non-DTC Diagnostics/Driveability - Diesel - Diagnosis and Testing
.
Is the EGR system operating properly?
Yes
- Go to step 4
No
- Repair the EGR System as needed.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure .
- Perform the CHECKING THE EGR SYSTEM performance test. Refer to Non-DTC Diagnostics/Driveability - Diesel - Diagnosis and Testing
.
- POOR FUEL SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM and CHECKING THE HIGH-SIDE FUEL PRESSURE performance tests. Refer to Non-DTC Diagnostics/Driveability - Diesel - Diagnosis and Testing
.
Is the fuel system operation normal?
Yes
- Go to step 5
No
- Repair the fuel system as needed.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure .
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM and CHECKING THE HIGH-SIDE FUEL PRESSURE performance tests. Refer to Non-DTC Diagnostics/Driveability - Diesel - Diagnosis and Testing
.
- (Z43) O2 1/1 NEGATIVE CURRENT CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the ECM C1 harness connector.
- Disconnect the O2 Sensor harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (Z43) O2 1/1 Negative Current Control circuit between the Oxygen Sensor harness connector and the Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connector.
Is the resistance below 10.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go to step 6
No
- Repair the circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure .
- OXYGEN SENSOR
- Replace the Oxygen Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- Reconnect the ECM C1 harness connector.
- Reconnect the O2 Sensor harness connector.
- Start the engine.
- Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. It may be necessary to test drive the vehicle to confirm repair.
- Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes.
- With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Is the status Active for this DTC?
Yes
- Go to step 7
No
- Test Complete.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure .
- ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors the Oxygen Sensor and the Engine Control Module (ECM).
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
- Monitor the scan tool data relative to this circuit and wiggle test the wiring and connectors.
- Look for the data to change or for the DTC to reset during the wiggle test.
- Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
