Diagnostic Test
- DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) PRESENT
- Using the scan tool, record DTCs and any liftgate inhibitors.
- Erase DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off, wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition on.
- Operate the liftgate several times.
- Using the scan tool, read DTCs.
Does the scan tool display B1963-POWER LIFTGATE STRUT PERFORMANCE?
Yes
- Go to step 2
No
- Make sure there is no intermittent binding or cold weather condition which may have caused this code to set.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Front Control (FCM) - Standard Procedure .
- BINDING LIFTGATE
- Operate the liftgate manually.
Does the Liftgate bind or stick while opening or closing?
Yes
- Repair the cause for the binding liftgate.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Front Control (FCM) - Standard Procedure .
No
- Go to step 3
- Operate the liftgate manually.
- CHECK (Q204) POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL 1 AND THE (Q205) POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL 2 CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
- Inspect the (Q204) Position sensor signal 1 circuit and the (Q205) Position Sensor Signal 2 circuits for a possible short together between the Power Liftgate Module C1 harness connector and the Power Liftgate Drive Unit harness connector.
Are the circuits shorted at either connector?
Yes
- Repair the (Q204) Position sensor signal 1 circuit for a short to the (Q205) Position Sensor Signal 2 circuit.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Front Control (FCM) - Standard Procedure .
No
- Go to step 4
- Inspect the (Q204) Position sensor signal 1 circuit and the (Q205) Position Sensor Signal 2 circuits for a possible short together between the Power Liftgate Module C1 harness connector and the Power Liftgate Drive Unit harness connector.
- WEAK STRUTS
- Check the prop rods to ensure the liftgate will self rise from approximately 1/4 open position.
- If necessary, compare the effort to open and close the liftgate with a known good vehicle.
Does the liftgate self rise as it should?
Yes
- Replace the Power Liftgate Drive Unit in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Front Control (FCM) - Standard Procedure .
No
- Replace the Liftgate Prop Rods (struts) in accordance with Service Information.
