Diagnostic Test

  1. 1) DTC PRESENT 

    With the scan tool, record DTCs and any liftgate inhibitors.

    Erase DTCs.

    Turn the ignition off, wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition on.

    Operate the liftgate several times.

    With the scan tool, read DTCs.

    Does the scan tool display B1963-POWER LIFTGATE STRUT PERFORMANCE? 

    Yes 

    1. Go to  2).

    No 

    1. Ensure there is no intermittent binding or cold weather condition which may have caused this code to set.
    2. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  2. 2) BINDING LIFTGATE 

    Operate the liftgate manually.

    Does the Liftgate bind or stick while opening or closing? 

    No 

    1. Go to  3).

    Yes 

    1. Repair the cause for the binding liftgate.
    2. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  3. 3) CHECK (Q204) POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL 1 AND THE (Q205) POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL 2 CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

    Inspect the (Q204) Position sensor signal 1 circuit and the (Q205) Position Sensor Signal 2 circuits for a possible short together between the Power Liftgate Module C1 harness connector and the Power Liftgate Drive Unit harness connector.

    Are the circuits shorted at either connector? 

    No 

    1. Go to  4).

    Yes 

    1. Repair the (Q204) Position sensor signal 1 circuit for a short to the (Q205) Position Sensor Signal 2 circuit.
    2. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  4. 4) WEAK STRUTS 

    Check the prop rods to ensure the liftgate will self rise from approximately 1/4 open position.

    If necessary, compare the effort to open and close the liftgate with a known good vehicle.

    Does the liftgate self rise as it should? 

    No 

    1. Replace the Liftgate Prop Rods (struts) in accordance with service information.
    2. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

    Yes 

    1. Replace the Power Liftgate Drive Unit in accordance with the service information.
    2. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
