SERVICE PROCEDURE

A. Reprogram the TCM for 2006 Model Year Vehicles

NOTE: This procedure must be performed with release 7.01 or later. To update your StarSCAN® diagnostic tool via the internet, the StarSCAN software must be at version 7.01 and properly configured to work with your dealership's network.
  1. Open the hood. Install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides 13.0 to 13.5 volts. If the battery charger is timer controlled, set the battery charger to continuous charge. Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process.
NOTE: Use an accurate stand alone voltmeter. The battery charger volt meter may not be sufficiently accurate. Voltages outside of the specified range will cause an unsuccessful flash.
  2. Connect the CH9410 StarSCAN ethernet cable to the StarSCAN and the dealer's network drop.
  3. Connect the CH9404 StarSCAN vehicle cable to the StarSCAN and the vehicle.
  4. Place the Ignition in the "RUN"  position, then Power "ON"  the StarSCAN.

    1. Select "Browse for New File".  Follow the on screen instructions.
    2. If the newly downloaded flash file "Part Number" description is the same as the number recorded in Step  e, then the TCM is up to date and no further action is required. If the part number is different, continue with Step 6c.
    3. Highlight the listed calibration on the StarSCAN screen.

OWNER NOTIFICATION LETTER

EMISSIONS RECALL F31 - REPROGRAM TCM FOR AFTERMARKET SCAN TOOL

Dear: (Name)

DaimlerChrysler has determined that some 2006 Jeep Liberty vehicles equipped with a diesel engine may have an improperly functioning on-board diagnostic system that does not comply with Federal regulations. This recall also involves a small number of 2005 and 2006 model year Jeep Liberty vehicles that had the transmission control module software updated as a service repair.

The problem is...  The Transmission Control Module (TCM) on your vehicle (VIN: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) was inadvertently programmed with software that may prevent proper communication with some aftermarket scan tools.

What your dealer will do... DaimlerChrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor).  To do this, your dealer will reprogram your vehicle's TCM with new software. The work will take about an hour to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on how dealer appointments are scheduled and processed.

What you must do...  Simply contact your dealer  right away to schedule a service appointment. Ask the dealer to hold the part for your vehicle or to order it before your appointment.

If you need help...  If you have questions or concerns which your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Please help us update our records, by filling out the attached prepaid postcard, if any of the conditions listed on the card apply to you or your vehicle.

If you have already experienced condition and have paid to have it repaired, you may send your original receipts and/or other adequate proof of payment to the following address for reimbursement: DaimlerChrysler, P.O. Box 4639 Oak Ridge, TN 37831, Attention: Reimbursement. Eligibility for this remedial action may not be denied solely on the basis that you used parts not manufactured by DaimlerChrysler Corporation, or had repairs performed by outlets other than DaimlerChrysler franchised dealers.

In order to assure your full protection under the emission warranty provisions, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could be determined as lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle. Further, without this repair, your vehicle may fail a state or local emission inspection test.

We are sorry for any inconvenience but trust that you understand our interest in clean air. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
