Shift Cable

  1. Check adjustment by starting engine in Park and Neutral. Adjustment is correct if engine starts ONLY in these positions. Adjustment is incorrect if engine starts in one but not both positions. If engine starts in any position other than Park or Neutral, or if engine will not start at all, check for faulty transmission range sensor.
  2. Shift transmission into Park. Using trim stick (C-4755) or equivalent, remove cup holder insert. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . On mini console-equipped models, remove bolt and remove cup holder. See Fig 1 . On full console-equipped models, remove trim disc from bottom of cup holder. See Fig 2 .
  3. If equipped with transmission shift bezel, pull shift lever handle off shift lever. Using trim stick (C-4755) or equivalent, remove shift bezel. Twist and remove bezel light. See Fig 3 . Use trim stick (C-4755) or equivalent to remove air bag deactivation switch, and disconnect electrical connector, if equipped.
  4. On all models, remove bolts attaching console to floor pan. See Fig 1 and Fig 4 . Shift transfer case to FOUR LOW position. Shift transmission to "L" position, and remove console assembly. Loosen shift cable adjustment nut. Raise vehicle.
  5. Unsnap cable eyelet from transmission manual shift lever. See Fig 5 . Verify transmission manual shift lever is in Park detent by moving lever fully rearward. Last rearward position is Park position. Verify positive engagement of transmission park lock by attempting to rotate drive shaft. Drive shaft will NOT rotate when park lock is engaged.
  6. Snap cable eyelet on transmission manual shift lever. Lower vehicle. Tighten shift cable adjustment screw to 106 INCH lbs. (12 N.m). Verify adjustment by attempting to start engine in Park and Neutral. Adjustment is okay if engine starts in Park and Neutral, and does not start in any other gear position. Install floor console components by reversing removal procedure.
