Hydraulic Pressure Tests: Notes

NOTE: A pressure gauge with a minimum capacity of 300 psi (21 kg/cm2 ) must be used to perform hydraulic pressure tests.
CAUTION: Do not maintain Wide Open Throttle (WOT) for more than 4 seconds when performing hydraulic pressure tests.
  1. Ensure fluid level and condition is okay. Install tachometer. Apply parking brake and block wheels. Using Adapter (7554), connect pressure gauge to test port on side of transmission case. See Fig 1 .
  2. Start engine and ensure engine idle speed is within specification. See emission decal in engine compartment. Apply service brake. Allow engine to idle until transmission is at normal operating temperature.
  3. Shift transmission into "D" (Drive) and note line pressure with engine idling. Line pressure should be 61-70 psi (4.3-4.9 kg/cm2 ).
  4. Fully depress throttle to WOT and note line pressure with transmission in "D" (Drive). Line pressure should be 173-209 psi (12.2-14.7 kg/cm2 ).
  5. Shift transmission into "R" (Reverse) and note line pressure with engine idling. Line pressure should be 75-90 psi (5.3-6.3 kg/cm2 ).
  6. Fully depress throttle to WOT and note line pressure with transmission in "R" (Reverse). Line pressure should be 213-263 psi (14.9-18.5 kg/cm2 ).
  7. If line pressure is not within specification, adjust throttle cable and repeat hydraulic pressure test. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
