Repairing Low Fuel Pressure (Cherokee & Wrangler)
WARNING:
Fuel system may be under pressure. Release fuel pressure before opening system for testing or component replacement. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE
.
- Turn ignition off. Inspect fuel supply line from pump module to fuel rail for restrictions. Fuel pump module is located in top of fuel tank. Repair restricted fuel line as necessary. If fuel line is okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect fuel pump module connector. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate fuel system test. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe Dark Green/White wire at fuel pump module connector. If test light illuminates and is bright, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate or is not bright, repair open or high resistance in Dark Green/White wire between fuel pump relay and fuel pump module.
- Stop fuel system actuation test. Measure resistance between ground and Black wire at fuel pump module connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between fuel pump module and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- At this time, fuel pump module is assumed to be defective. Replace fuel pump module. See FUEL PUMP MODULE under FUEL SYSTEM in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article.
