DTC P0500: No Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see CHEROKEE
wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE:
DTC P0500: NO VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL is monitored continuously with engine running. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when PCM senses output shaft speed more than 64 RPM, engine coolant temperature more than 104°F (40°C), MAP vacuum 15-16 in. Hg, engine speed more than 1500 RPM and no Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal for more than 15 seconds for 2 consecutive trips. Possible causes are: defective VSS, defective VSS speedometer pinion gear, improperly seated or positioned VSS speedometer pinion gear adapter, inactive DTC, defective PCM, defective connector or defective wiring.
WARNING:
Keep hands and feet clear of rotating wheels.
- Turn ignition off. Raise and support vehicle so wheels are free to rotate. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, read VSS signal. Place transmission in any forward gear and allow wheels to rotate. If scan tool displays more than zero MPH, go to next step. If scan tool displays zero MPH, go to step 3).
- At this time, condition required to set DTC is not present. Turn ignition off. Visually inspect related connectors and wiring harness for damage. Repair connectors and wiring harness as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A. If connectors and wiring harness are okay, test is complete.
- Ensure ignition is off. Inspect VSS speedometer pinion gear adapter for proper seating and positioning. Adapter is located on transmission extension housing. Repair as necessary. If adapter is okay, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off . Disconnect VSS connector. VSS connector is attached to adapter, located on transmission extension housing. Clean and/or repair connector as necessary. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a voltmeter, check voltage on VSS connector, 5-volt supply circuit (Violet/Orange wire). If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4 volts or less, repair open VSS 5-volt supply circuit. Perform TEST VER-5A.
- Ensure ignition is off. Ensure VSS connector is still disconnected. Connect one end of a jumper wire to VSS connector, signal circuit (White/Orange wire). Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, monitor VSS signal when tapping other end of jumper wire to VSS connector, sensor ground circuit (Brown/Yellow wire) several times. If scan tool displays more than zero MPH, go to next step. If scan tool displays zero MPH, go to step 7).
- Ensure ignition is off. Remove VSS and inspect speedometer pinion gear. Repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A. If speedometer pinion gear is okay, replace VSS. Perform TEST VER-5A.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect VSS connector. VSS is located on transmission extension housing. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located in engine compartment. See PCM LOCATION table under SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS. Clean and/or repair connectors as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of VSS connector, sensor ground circuit (Brown/Yellow wire) between VSS connector and PCM connector. If resistance is 5 ohms more than, repair open VSS sensor ground circuit. Perform TEST VER-5A. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Ensure VSS and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance of VSS signal circuit (White/Orange wire) between VSS connector and PCM connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open VSS signal circuit. Perform TEST VER-5A. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Ensure VSS and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and VSS signal circuit (White/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair VSS signal circuit for short to ground. Perform TEST VER-5A. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Ensure VSS and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and VSS connector, sensor ground circuit (Brown/Yellow wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-5A. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair VSS sensor ground circuit for short to ground. Perform TEST VER-5A.
