Test NTC-33A: Checking Water-In-Fuel Light & Sensor

NOTE: This test applies to vehicles equipped with diesel engine experiencing problems with WATER-IN-FUEL light only. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For component location and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Disconnect Water-In-Fuel (WIF) sensor connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  2. Connect a jumper wire between ground and WIF sensor connector, sensor signal circuit (Dark Green/Red wire). Turn ignition off, then on to recycle light. If WIF light comes on, perform TEST NTC-33B: CHECKING WATER-IN-FUEL LIGHT & SENSOR . If WIF light does not come on, turn ignition off and go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connectors and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  4. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of WIF sensor signal circuit (Dark Green/Red wire) between WIF sensor connector and PCM Black connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open WIF sensor signal circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition on. Using an external voltmeter, check voltage on PCM Gray connector, WIF light driver circuit (Tan/Orange wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect WIF light connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  7. Inspect WIF light bulb. If bulb is burned-out, replace bulb and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If bulb is okay, reinstall bulb and go to next step.
  8. Using an external voltmeter, backprobe message center connector, fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Yellow wire). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open fused ignition switch output circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  9. Connect a jumper wire between ground and PCM Gray connector, WIF light driver circuit (Tan/Orange wire). If WIF light does not come on, repair open WIF light driver circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If WIF light comes on, replace message center printed circuit assembly and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
