Test NTC-32A: Checking Wait-To-Start Light

NOTE: This test applies to vehicles equipped with diesel engine experiencing problems with WAIT-TO-START light only. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For component location and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. While observing WAIT-TO-START light, turn ignition on. If WAIT-TO-START light does not come on, go to step 4)  . If light comes on then turns off, system is operating normally. Test passed. If light comes on and stays on, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connectors and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  3. While observing WAIT-TO-START light, turn ignition on. If WAIT-TO-START light comes on, repair short to ground in WAIT-TO-START light driver circuit (Orange/Black wire) and perform TEST VER-2A. If WAIT-TO-START light does not come on, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
  5. Turn ignition on. Using an external voltmeter, check voltage on PCM White connector, WAIT-TO-START light driver circuit (Orange/Black wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect WAIT-TO-START light connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  7. Inspect WAIT-TO-START light bulb. If bulb is burned-out, replace bulb and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If bulb is okay, reinstall bulb and go to next step.
  8. Backprobe message center connector, fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Yellow wire). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open fused ignition switch output circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  9. Connect a jumper wire between ground and message center connector, WAIT-TO-START light driver circuit (Orange/Black wire). If WAIT-TO-START light comes on, repair open WAIT-TO-START light driver circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If WAIT-TO-START light does not come on, replace message center printed circuit assembly and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
