Road Test

NOTE: Perform road test to determine if problem is related to a mechanical or electrical component.
  1. With ignition off, disconnect 26-pin harness connector from Transmission Control Module (TCM). The TCM may be located under instrument panel next to A/C-heater unit, or behind left side of lower finish panel. See Fig 1 .

  2. Road test vehicle. Shift transmission into each gear. Transmission should operate as specified.
    • Lock When In Park
    • Back-Up When In Reverse
    • Should Not Move When In Neutral
    • Provide 1st Gear Only With Shift Lever In "1-2" Position
    • Operate In 3rd Gear Only With Shift Lever In "3" Position
    • Operate In 4th Gear (Overdrive) In "D" Position
  3. If transmission operates properly, go to next step. If forward gears were difficult to distinguish (all feel the same), or vehicle would not back-up, see TROUBLE SHOOTING  . DO NOT perform torque converter stall speed test or time lag test.
CAUTION: DO NOT overspeed engine when performing downshifts. Release throttle and allow vehicle to slow down before downshifting.
  4. Continue road test. Manually downshift transmission from "D" position to "3" position, and from "3" position to "1-2" position. Manually upshift transmission through forward gears again.
  5. If transmission operates properly, perform torque converter stall speed test, time lag test and hydraulic pressure test. If problem is still present, check electronic control system for stored DTCs. See AISIN WARNER 4 ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article. Once road test is completed, reconnect TCM harness connector.
NOTE: For transmission gear component application, see CLUTCH, BRAKE & BAND APPLICATION  and VALVE BODY SOLENOID APPLICATION  .
