Test TC-50A - Trans 3-4 Solenoid/Trans Relay CKTS

NOTE: Test applies to vehicles equipped with automatic transmission only. For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION DIRECTORY. For component location see wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. If 12-VOLT RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT DTC is also set, perform TEST TC-173. If DTC is not set, road test vehicle and reach a speed of 50 MPH. Depress Overdrive (OD) switch 4 times so that vehicle attempts to shift from fourth gear to third gear and back. If vehicle does not shift between third and fourth gear, go to step 5). If vehicle shifts between third and fourth gear, go to next step.
  2. Condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. 3-4 SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC sets if an open or shorted circuit exists in3-4 shift solenoid circuit. Possible causes are: open or shorted wiring to 3-4 shift solenoid, open fused ignition switch output circuit, defective connector terminals, or defective 3-4 shift solenoid. Go to next step.
  3. Inspect all related wiring and connectors. Repair wiring and connectors as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If wiring and connectors are okay, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Start engine. Using scan tool, read DTCs while wiggling wiring harness from 3-4 shift solenoid to PCM and note if 3-4 SOLENOID DTC resets. If DTC resets, repair wiring harness as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If DTC does not reset, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION. Test is complete. Perform TEST VER-2A.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission (TRANS) solenoid connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate TRANS control relay. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on TRANS solenoid connector, TRANS relay output circuit (Light Blue wire). If voltage does not switch from zero to more than 10 volts, perform TEST TC-50B. If voltage switches from zero to more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If connectors and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition on. Check voltage on TRANS solenoid connector, 3-4 solenoid control circuit (Brown wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, perform TEST TC-50D. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition off. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and PCM White connector, 3-4 solenoid control circuit (Brown wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in 3-4 solenoid control circuit and perform TEST TC-50D. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  10. Reconnect TRANS solenoid connector. Check resistance between ground and PCM White connector, 3-4 solenoid control circuit (Brown wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in 3-4 solenoid control circuit and perform TEST VER-2A. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  11. Remove TRANS control relay. Inspect TRANS relay connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  12. Using external ohmmeter, connect one lead to TRANS relay connector, TRANS control relay output circuit (Light Blue wire). Go to next step.
  13. Connect other lead to PCM White connector, 3-4 shift solenoid control circuit (Brown wire). If resistance is 26-40 ohms, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-2A. If resistance is less than 26 ohms, perform TEST TC-50C. If resistance is more than 40 ohms, go to next step.
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TRANS solenoid connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  15. Check resistance of 3-4 solenoid circuit (Brown wire) between PCM White connector and TRANS solenoid connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open 3-4 solenoid circuit and perform TEST VER-2A. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace TRANS solenoid and harness assembly. Perform TEST VER-2A.
