System Testing

  1. Check defogger system related fuses in Power Distribution Center (PDC) and fuse box. See WIRING DIAGRAM  . Replace fuses as necessary. Ensure rear glass heating grid power and ground wires are connected to glass. Confirm heating grid ground wire has continuity to ground.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. While monitoring instrument panel voltmeter, set defogger switch to ON position. When defogger switch is turned on, a distinct voltmeter needle deflection should be noted. If a severe voltmeter needle deflection is noted, check for a short.
  3. After 3-4 minutes of operation, check if defogger is working by feeling glass. A distinct difference in temperature between grid lines and adjacent clear glass or mirror glass should be felt.
  4. Using a 12-volt DC voltmeter, connect negative voltmeter lead to rear glass heating grid terminal "A" (passenger's side). Connect positive voltmeter lead to terminal "B" (driver's side). Voltmeter should read battery voltage. See Fig 1 . If defogger system does not function as described, go to next step.
  5. If rear glass heating grid or heated mirror glass is inoperative, one or more of the following is defective: Defogger switch, defogger relay, instrument cluster circuitry, rear window grid lines (all grid lines would have to be broken or one of the feed wires disconnected for the entire system to be inoperative) or outside rear view mirror heating grid. Go to DEFOGGER SWITCH TEST  .
