Windshield Wiper System Test

  1. Remove in-line circuit breaker near fuse block module. Turn ignition switch to ACCESSORY or ON position. Measure voltage at battery side of circuit breaker cavity. If battery voltage is not read, repair wiring from ignition switch. If battery voltage is read, measure resistance across circuit breaker terminals. If meter reads any resistance, replace circuit breaker.
  2. If meter read does not read any resistance, unplug wiper motor side of wiring harness connector (Gray) from wiper (multifunction) switch side of wiring harness connector (Black), or intermittent wiper module (if equipped) at base of steering column. Turn ignition switch to ACCESSORY or ON position.
  3. Measure voltage at unplugged wiper motor side of wiring harness connector (Gray) terminal "D". If meter does not read battery voltage, repair wiring from circuit breaker.
  4. If meter reads battery voltage, turn ignition off. Measure resistance from unplugged wiper motor side of wiring harness connector (Gray) terminal "G" to ground. If meter reads more than zero ohms, repair wiring to ground.
  5. If meter reads zero ohms, leave ignition off. Backprobe wiring harness connector at wiper motor. See Fig 1 . Measure resistance from terminal No. 4 of wiper motor side of connector to ground. If meter reads more than zero ohms, repair wiring to ground.

  6. If meter reads zero ohms, if equipped with intermittent wiper, replace intermittent wipe module with a known good unit. Test wiper operation in all modes. If operation is okay, replace intermittent wipe module. If operation is not okay, reinstall original module and go to next step.
  7. Test wiper/washer (multifunction) switch. See FRONT WIPER/WASHER SWITCH TEST. If switch tests okay, go to next step. If switch does not test okay, replace switch and go to step 12).
  8. To test wiper (multifunction) switch circuits, turn ignition switch to ACCESSORY or ON position. Position wiper switch as indicated and backprobe switch side of wiring harness connector (Black).
  9. Measure voltage at connector terminal "E" with wiper switch in LOW or MIST position, and washer switch depressed. If meter does not read battery voltage, repair wiring to switch.
  10. If meter reads battery voltage, measure voltage at connector terminal "C" with wiper switch in HIGH position. If meter does not read battery voltage, repair wiring to switch.
  11. If meter reads battery voltage, turn wiper switch to LOW or HIGH position and measure voltage at connector terminal "F", then move wiper switch to OFF. Meter should read battery voltage until wipers park, then zero volts. If voltage is correct, go to next step. If voltage is not correct, repair wiring to wiper motor, then go to next step.
  12. Turn ignition switch to ACCESSORY or ON position. Position wiper switch and backprobe motor connector as indicated. See Fig 1 .
  13. With switch in any position, measure voltage at terminal No. 1. If meter does not read battery voltage, repair wiring from circuit breaker.
  14. If meter reads battery voltage, turn wiper switch to LOW position and measure voltage at terminal No. 5. If meter reads battery voltage but wipers do not work, replace wiper motor. If meter does not read battery voltage, repair wiring from switch or intermittent wipe module connector.
  15. With wiper switch in HIGH position, measure voltage at terminal No. 6. If meter reads battery voltage but wipers do not operate, replace wiper motor. If meter does not read battery voltage, repair wiring from switch or intermittent wipe module connector. 16) With wiper switch in LOW or HIGH position, voltmeter connected to terminal No. 2, turn wiper switch to OFF position and observe meter. Meter should read battery voltage when switch goes to OFF, then zero volts after wipers park. If battery voltage is present but wipers fail to park, or if battery voltage is not present, replace wiper motor.
