Tachometer Inoperative

  1. With engine running, check for a tachometer signal at PCM pin No. 43. Refer to TACHOMETER CALIBRATION  in this article. Also, see Fig 2 . If signal is according to specification, go to next step. If signal is not according to specification, replace PCM.

  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Unplug PCM connector. Remove instrument cluster bezel and cluster assembly. Disconnect instrument cluster connector "A".
  3. Probe cavity A6 of cluster connector "A". Check for continuity to ground. If there is no continuity, go to the next step. If there is continuity, repair short circuit as required.
  4. Still probing cavity A6 of cluster connector "A", check for continuity to cavity No. 43 of PCM connector. If there is continuity, replace tachometer. If there is no continuity, repair open circuit as required.
