Speedometer/Odometer Inoperative

  1. Perform Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) test. See appropriate test in the TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If VSS is good, go to next step. If VSS tests bad, replace the VSS.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Unplug vehicle speed sensor, PCM and daytime running light module connectors. Remove instrument cluster bezel and cluster assembly. Disconnect instrument cluster connector "A". See Figure and Figure .
  3. Probe cavity C5 of cluster connector "A". Check for continuity to ground. If there is no continuity, go to next step. If there is continuity, repair short circuit as required.
  4. Still probing cavity C5 of cluster connector "A", check for continuity to cavity No. 1 of VSS connector. If there is continuity, replace speedometer/odometer. If there is no continuity, repair open circuit as required.
