Brake Indicator Inoperative

  1. Unplug parking brake switch connector. Turn ignition switch to START position. Light should illuminate. Release ignition switch to ON position. Light should go off. If results are correct, go to step 10). If results are incorrect, go to next step.
  2. Unplug brake warning switch connector. Install jumper between 2 cavities of connector. Turn ignition switch to START. Light should go on. Remove jumper and light should go out. If test is okay, replace brake warning switch. If not okay, remove jumper and go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Install jumper between cavity No. 2 of brake warning switch connector and ground. If light comes on, go to step 5). If light does not come on, go to next step. See Fig 1 .

  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove jumper and disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster bezel and cluster assembly. Install jumper between cavity No. 8 of cluster (tell-tale) connector No. 2 and ground. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch to ON position. If light comes on, repair open in circuit to brake warning switch. If light does not come on, replace bulb.
  5. Turn Ignition switch to OFF position and remove jumper. Disconnect negative battery cable. Check for continuity between cavity No. 1 of brake warning switch connector and ground with ignition switch in START position. If there is no continuity, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and remove jumper wire. Disconnect negative battery cable. Unplug ignition switch connector. Check for continuity between ignition switch cavity No. 3 and ground. If there is no continuity, go to next step. If there is continuity, repair short circuit between ignition switch and brake warning switch connectors. See Fig 2 .

  7. Check for continuity between ignition switch connector cavity No. 3 and brake warning switch connector cavity No. 1. If there is continuity, go to next step. If there is no continuity, repair open circuit as required.
  8. Check for continuity between metal steering column jacket and ground. If there is continuity, go to next step. If no continuity, ensure steering column ground clip is installed correctly.
  9. Turn ignition switch to START position and hold. Check for continuity between terminal No. 3 of ignition switch and ground. If there is no continuity, replace ignition switch.
  10. Unplug brake warning switch connector. Check for continuity between parking brake switch connector and ground. If there is no continuity, go to next step. If there is continuity, repair short circuit as required.
  11. Check for continuity between parking brake switch connector and cavity No. 2 of brake warning switch connector. If there is continuity, replace parking brake switch. If no continuity, repair open circuit to brake warning switch.
