- Lubricate "O" rings with ATF and install on clutch piston. Install clutch piston in direct clutch drum. Install piston return springs and retainer.
- Using press and spring compressor, compress piston return springs and install snap ring. Ensure ends of snap ring are not aligned with tab on retainer for piston return springs.
CAUTION:
Before installing clutch discs, ensure components are soaked in ATF at least 30 minutes.
- Install clutch discs and clutch plates in direct clutch drum starting with a clutch plate and then a clutch disc. See Figure
. Install original number of components.
- Install retainer with flat side toward clutch disc. Install clutch pack snap ring. Ensure ends of snap rings are not located with notch area in direct clutch drum. See Figure
.
CAUTION:
Ensure retainer is installed with flat side toward clutch disc and flange side toward clutch pack snap ring. Ends of clutch pack snap ring must not be aligned with notch area in direct clutch drum.
- Position direct clutch drum on overdrive support. Mount dial indicator with stem resting on clutch piston. See Figure
.
- Apply 57-114 psi (4-8 kg/cm2
) air pressure through feed hole in overdrive support and note clutch piston stroke. See Figure
.
- Clutch piston stroke should be .054-.065" (1.37-1.65 mm). If piston stroke is incorrect, install different thickness retainer. See DIRECT CLUTCH RETAINER SELECTION CHART
.

- Lubricate thrust washer with petroleum jelly and install in direct clutch drum. Ensure flat side of thrust washer is toward direct clutch drum. See Fig 1
.
- Install direct clutch on forward clutch assembly and measure assembled height. See Fig 2
. Assembled height should be 2.767-2.815" (70.28-71.50 mm). If assembled height is not within specification, clutches are not seated.
