Direct Clutch: Disassembly

  1. Separate direct clutch from forward clutch. Remove thrust washer from center of direct clutch drum. See Fig 1 .
  2. Direct clutch piston stroke must be checked. Position direct clutch drum on overdrive support. Mount dial indicator with stem resting on clutch piston. See Fig 2 .
  3. Apply 57-114 psi (4-8 kg/cm2 ) air pressure through feed hole in overdrive support and note clutch piston stroke reading on dial indicator. Check clutch piston stroke at least twice.
  4. Clutch piston stroke should be .054-.065" (1.37-1.65 mm). If clutch piston stroke is not within specification, either retainer or clutch discs must be replaced. If clutch discs are okay, retainer must be replaced with different thickness retainer.
CAUTION: Note direction of clutch pack component installation and number of each component for reassembly reference. Components must be installed in original location. See Fig 1 .
  5. Remove clutch pack snap ring, retainer, clutch discs and clutchplates. Using press and Spring Compressor (7538), compress piston return springs. Remove piston return spring retaining snap ring and remove spring compressor.
  6. Remove piston return springs and retainer. Position direct clutch drum on overdrive support as when checking clutch piston stroke. Apply air pressure through feed hole in overdrive support and remove clutch piston. Remove "O" rings from clutch piston.
