Preliminary Inspection

  1. Ensure shift linkage and throttle cable is properly adjusted and no binding exists. If adjustment is required, see appropriate TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  2. Check engine throttle operation. Fully depress accelerator and ensure throttle plate fully opens. Adjust cable/linkage if throttle plate does not fully open.
  3. Ensure transmission fluid level is correct with transmission at normal operating temperature.
  4. Ensure engine will start with shift lever in Park or Neutral only. If engine starts in gear, adjust neutral switch. See NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Ensure Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) operates properly. See AUTO TRANS DIAGNOSIS - AW4 (4.0L 6-CYL) article.
