Forward Clutch Assembly: Reassembly
- Lubricate bearing and race assembly with petroleum jelly and install in clutch drum. Race side of assembly faces downward and toward drum. Bearing rollers face up. Coat new clutch drum shaft seal rings with petroleum jelly. Before installing drum shaft seal rings, squeeze each ring so ring ends overlap. This tightens ring, making clutch installation easier. Install seal rings on shaft. Mount clutch drum on overdrive support. Lubricate and install new "O" ring on clutch drum hub.
- Lubricate and install new "O" rings on clutch piston and install piston in drum. Install return springs. Compress springs and install piston snap ring. Ensure snap ring end gap is NOT aligned with any drum notches. Install cushion plate. Concave side of plate faces downward.
- Install clutch discs, plates and retainer. Install tabbed plate followed by disc until required of plates and discs are installed. See FORWARD CLUTCH PLATE USAGE table. Install clutch pack snap ring.
- Recheck clutch piston stroke length using method described in disassembly procedure. If stroke length is not within specified limits, replace clutch discs.
- Lubricate thrust bearing and race and install in clutch drum. Ensure thrust bearing rollers face up. Verify bearing and race size. Outer diameter of bearing is 1.839" (46.7 mm) and outer diameter of race is 1.925" (48.9 mm). Inner diameter of bearing and race is 1.024" (26 mm). Mount forward clutch on direct clutch and check assembled height. Height should be 2.767-2.815" (70.3-71.5 mm).
