Forward Clutch Assembly: Disassembly
- Remove thrust bearing and bearing race from forward clutch drum. Mount dial indicator on clutch drum. See Fig 1
. Apply compressed air through right side feed hole in support and note piston stroke length on dial indicator. Stroke length should be .147-.181" (3.73-4.60 mm) on 6-cylinder transmissions and .135-.167" (3.42-4.24 mm) on 4-cylinder transmissions. Replace clutch discs if stroke length is not within specification. Remove clutch pack snap ring, retainer, clutch pack and cushion plate. See Fig 2
.
- Compress clutch springs with Tool (B.Vi. FM-27) and remove piston snap ring. Remove compressor tool and piston return springs. Remount forward clutch on overdrive support. Using shop air through feed hole in support carefully remove piston. Remove "O" rings from piston rear hub and shaft. Remove thrust bearing and race from clutch drum.
- Measure clutch disc thickness. Minimum thickness is .0724" (1.84 mm) on 4-cylinder transmission and .060" (1.52 mm) on 6-cylinder transmissions. Measure clutch plate thickness. Minimum thickness is .078" (2.0 mm) on 4-cylinder transmissions and .070" (1.8 mm) on 6-cylinder transmission. Measure free length of piston return springs with springs mounted in retainer. Length should be .767" (19.47 mm).
- Inspect clutch piston check ball. Ball should move freely within piston. Check ball seating by applying low-pressure compressed air to hall feed hole. Ball should seat firmly and not leak air.
- Measure inside diameter of bushing in clutch drum hub. Maximum allowable diameter is .948" (24.08 mm). Replace clutch drum if bushing I.D. exceeds limits.
