Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

The TPS is mounted on the throttle body and is connected to the throttle valve shaft. The TPS is a variable resistor that provides ECU with input voltage that represents throttle valve position. Input voltage to the ECU from the TPS varies from one volt at minimum throttle opening (idle) to 5 volts at wide open throttle. The ECU uses TPS voltage to determine current engine operating conditions.

TPS is not the same for M/T and A/T. The TPS used with A/T have 2 integral wire harness connectors (one 4-pin connector and one 3-pin connector) that plug into the engine wire harness. The 4-pin connector supplies input to the ECU. The 3-pin connector provides input to the transmission control unit. See Figure . The TPS used with M/T does not have an integral wire harness connector. The engine wire harness connects directly to the TPS. See Figure .
