Trouble Shooting
- Before performing any electrical test, visually inspect all charging system components and wiring for obvious problems. Malfunction of charging system is usually indicated by one or more of the following symptoms:
- Defective alternator warning light, ammeter or voltmeter.
- Undercharged battery, indicated by slow starter motor operation and battery electrolyte having low specific gravity.
- Overcharged battery, indicated by excess water usage.
- If warning light does not illuminate when ignition is turned on, check if connector on alternator is loose or disconnected. Check ring terminal on alternator case for a good ground. Check bulb condition by grounding the .25" (6 mm) wide terminal on connector. If bulb does not light, check bulb and/or wiring.
- If warning light illuminates while engine is running, there is a charging system defect that may be caused by loose or broken alternator drive belt, internal malfunction and/or defective regulator.
