Diagnosis & Testing: Procedures

Diagnosis of the CEC system should be performed in the following order:

  1. Make sure that all engine systems not related to the CEC system are operating properly. DO NOT proceed with testing unless all other problems have been repaired.
  2. Put the system into diagnostic mode and record trouble codes flashed by "CHECK ENGINE" lamp. Exit the diagnostic mode.
  3. If trouble codes were displayed, decide whether the codes are "hard" or "intermittent" trouble codes.
  4. Proceed to Diagnostic Circuit Check chart. Follow all instructions given in that chart.
  5. If no trouble codes were displayed, proceed to System Performance Check chart.
  6. If the lamp illuminates intermittently, but no trouble codes are stored in ECM memory, proceed to Driver Complaint chart.
  7. After any repairs are made, always perform System Performance Check. Clear any trouble codes.

NOTE: Each of the steps listed here are described later in this section. If you are unsure of the proper way to test, read through the following material.
