Dynamic Timing (Engine Running) & Idle Speed

  1. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Stop engine and connect Injection Pulse Sensor Clamp (part of Dynamic Timing Meter J-33300-200) to No. 1 cylinder injection pipe. Install magnetic pick-up probe into TDC access slot. See Fig 1.

NOTE: To ease placement of probe in TDC access slot, it may be necessary to cut away a small portion of plastic shield underneath pump.
  2. Ensure that probe insertion limiting device is placed at a depth of 1.4567 in. (37 mm). Connect battery voltage to timing meter. Place rocker timing meter rocker switches to "MAGNETIC PICK-UP" and "CLAMP-ON/PICK-UP" positions.
  3. Start engine. Set magnetic offset control for 0°. Observe test display. Injection pump timing should be about 8°. If timing is incorrect, perform STATIC TIMING (ENGINE STOPPED) adjustment procedure under INJECTION PUMP TIMING . If timing is correct, set idle speed to 800 RPM using idle set screw. See Fig 2.
